ESTAR: los estados

Para hablar de los sentimientos (feelings) o del estado (state or status) no usamos el verbo SER (to be). Usamos el verbo ESTAR (to be).

El verbo ESTAR es irregular. En presente, se conjuga así:

Yo estoy (I am)

Tú estás (You are)

Él/ella está (He/she is)

Usted está (You are: formal)

Nosotros/-as estamos (We are)

Vosotros/-as estáis (You all are)

Ellos/-as están (They are)

Ustedes están (You all are: formal)

Para hablar de estados de ánimo (moods) o sentimientos:

Estoy contento/-a (happy)

Estoy feliz (happy)

Estoy triste (sad)

Estoy deprimido/-a (depressed)

Estoy enfadado/-a (angry)

Estoy furioso/-a (furious)

Estoy enamorado/-a (in love)

Estoy nervioso/-a (nervous)

Estoy ansioso/-a (anxious)

Estoy agobiado/-a (suffocated)

Estoy tranquilo/-a (calm)

Para hablar de estados físicos (physical states) o de salud (health):

Estoy enfermo/-a (sick)

Estoy malo/-a (sick)

Estoy sano/-a (healthy)

Estoy bueno/-a (healthy)

Estoy cansado/-a (tired)

Estoy constipado/-a (I have a cold)

Estoy resfriado/-a (I have a cold)

Estoy acatarrado/-a (I have a very bad cold)

Para hablar del estado civil (marital status):

Estoy soltero/-a (single)

Estoy comprometido/-a (engaged)

Estoy casado/-a (married)

Estoy separado/-a (separated)

Estoy divorciado/-a (divorced)

Estoy viudo/-a* (I am a widower/widow)

*Note 1: the marital status may not be permanent, which is why we use the verb ESTAR. However, the status "viudo/-a" is not something that can ever go away. Thus it is correct to use the verb SER: "Es viudo/-a".

Para hablar de otros estados (other states):

Está de pie (standing)

Está levantado/-a (up)

Está sentado/-a (seated)

Está tumbado/-a (lying down)

Está acostado/-a (lying down)

Está despierto/-a (awake)

Está dormido/-a (asleep)

Está encendido/-a (It is on)

Está apagado/-a (It is off)

Wanted: alive or dead

Está vivo/-a (alive)

Está muerto/-a** (dead)

*Note 2: it is possible to say "estoy muerto" (meaning "I am exhausted") or "estoy muerto de risa" (dying of laughter),"estoy muerto de miedo" (dying of fear), etc.
